As she watched her daughter and friends skateboard at the local skate park, surfer and skateboarder Saazu Saeed felt inspired to create a movement that would empower young girls in the Maldives. Teaming up with fellow skateboarder and photographer Aishath Naj, she co-founded Volans Maldives—a movement that celebrates the strength and grace of girls and women in motion. The name held special meaning for Saazu, drawn from the constellation Piscis Volans (Flying Fish) to symbolize their fearless "flying girls."
I spent the day photographing Volans on Gaumee Dhuvas (National Day), where these girls proved they are just as capable as the boys—fearlessly conquering the concrete, even in traditional dresses and skirts.
